My character project is based on the idea of pitting mind over matter. I was inspired by the scene in the science fiction novel Dune in which Paul Atreides, the protagonist of the story, is tested by a device called “the box”. His examiner produces a device and asks Paul to place his hand inside. She says that the box will give the sensation of extreme pain. He will feel as if his flesh is burning and melting even though it is perfectly safe. She then places a poisoned needle within striking distance of Paul’s neck and says she will kill him if he withdraws his hand before the test is over, thus pitting his knowledge against his instinctual response.

Not being a sadist I would like to create a similar situation using a character who will attempt to startle the player rather than hurt them. In order to win the game the player must sit perfectly still and not flinch no matter what happens. This will be adjudicated using a motion sensor.
