Holly’s LA Weekly article on the Marco Brambilla show “The Dark Lining” at the Santa Monica Museum of Art includes interviews with artists and luminaries of stereoscopic 3D including Ray Zone, Zoe Beloff and IMD’s own Perry Hoberman. Brambilla actually claims that his amazing centerpiece 3D projects Civilization (Megaplex) and Evolution (Megaplex) constitute the first use of stereo 3D for video art installation, an assertion that seems to be difficult both to substantiate and also to disprove (unless you count last month’s Rhythms and Visions show at SCA). The Brambilla show is up through August 20 and is well worth the trip for these two climactic pieces alone – if you haven’t decided to devote your life to 3D before, this just might do it.

Definitely worth checking out – the 3D pieces are mesmerizing and very well done. Although I would have to strongly dispute his interview statement that this work is ” the first use of 3D in an art context”. MANY artists have explored S3D ranging from Salvador Dali’s 3d paintings, to Alphons Schilling, to our very own Perry Hoberman.
