Janet Cardiff's Mixed Reality Works

JanetCardiff_t.jpg

A new work by Janet Cardiff is up in NYC until Sept. - review in Metropolis Magazine here:

A Sound-Art Project that Reconfigures Central Park | Urban Journal | Metropolis Magazine

When the 48-minute walk ends, you feel as though you have been on a long and somehow transformative journey through a landscape that is at once familiar and wholly new. The challenge Cardiff sets you is to continue bringing such attention to bear even after you've returned the headset, to extend your walk into a summer-long excursion of close discernments and unexpected discoveries.

I'd like to try this out...

I think there seems to be an interesting thread happening in a lot of this location-specific media / art right now. It's present in this piece of Cardiff's (as the journalist notes), as well as being a large part of things like blast theory's uncle roy all around you, and the angel project by Deborah Warner that ran (also) in new york. This thread, to me, is the exploration of intent in these walks. How much has the artist planted, produced -- and how much is just the environment, the idiosyncracies of a specific location. I think that these endevours really bring people closer to these locations -- not only on the level of getting some description, etc., of the area, but the nature of the environments around us in general. The metropolis reporter writes:

"and herein lines the greatest achievement of the piece. Through heightening your awareness, Cardiff transforms even frequented sections of the park: everything you see becomes a potential work of art, an existing aperture that you’ve failed to look through until now."

To me, this is exactly the point.
