BBC hoaxed on Dow Bhopal responsibility story
(EMEA News, 12/3/04) The BBC has issued a retraction of an interview aired on BBC World this morning, which purportedly showed a Dow Chemical spokesperson taking responsibility for the Bhopal gas tragedy and promising huge compensation to victims. More
(London Times, 12/3/04) The Yes Men are Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno, two enigmatic activists who use the internet and media to lampoon corporations and politicians. Although it is unclear which of them fronted the elaborate hoax that tricked the BBC into broadcasting a fake apology for the Bhopal disaster - the so-called spokesman looked like Bichlbaum - the stunt carries all their hallmarks. These guys are just too good. The fake web site is at http://www.dowethics.com and is well worth looking at.
The Guardian reports: "It appears that part of the Dow website had been hijacked in a detailed and carefully planned operation", which implies that YM actually hacked Dow's site. In fact they simply registered their own domain for the stunt.
