blog redesign
So, I understand that there will ultimately be private/exec design decisions made for the blog redesign, but with that in mind, can we discuss / create some suggestions?
I for one would like to see the banner at the very least change soon. It's just old and tired. As well as a much more professional look, while at the same time preserving some of the indie feel. I like pictures on top of text, as well as some color beyond blue!
One example that has some nice aspects, but isn't necessarily what I'd envision: http://www.interaction-ivrea.it/en/index.asp
anyone have points of inspiration or design ideas?

Oh, and maybe some of us can come up with something for the t-shirt over break.

of course, a lot of this depends on finalizing the division logo...has/is this going to be done anytime reasonably soon?

part of the idea for designing a t-shirt was to do it before we were branded

agree. e.g. several packs of color designs could be applicable and helpful for the webblog as season changes.

With Scott, Tracy and Erik Loyer, I've been assisting them with the design for a revamp of the site - we're going to have pages about the various research areas, the labs, projects in progress, and we're going to develop a system for adding new classes/people/projects, and archiving the old ones. Because if it all goes well, there will actually be some alumni from this division in a few months -
My focus is on the backend, figuring out how to use the web server to pull together static and dynamic content. I'm generally in favor of evolutionary change for web sites, improving bit by bit, but in this case, I believe we're going to be rolling out a larger redesign in a few months.

By the way - it's our intention to put the web design document on a Wiki, where everyone in the department can have a look at it, and can make changes/suggestions. We should be ready for that by early next semester. Thanks for offering ideas here - I'll be interested to see what you think of our proposal. I like the idea of seasonal changes; we're aiming for a site that reflects more of what's happening in our division on a day-to-day basis.

I look forward to seeing what is in mind. I'd like to see immediate cosmetic changes. I've heard "a few months" before.

so, here's my take on a near term blog facelift for anyone to do what they will with (including ignore):

wow - that's pretty, I like that header. It strikes me as very "Prarie State" which is just fine by me.
