The Economist on Video Games

This was in my mail box when I got home this afternoon. (Actually, on the floor cause my mail comes through the slot in the door.) Anyway, I haven't read it yet, but I couldn't resist blogging it. (Mea culpa - just imagine I were blogging about a new Apple computer mouse I may not have tried out.) For those new to The Economist, the reading literacy here is that the cover is usually a lead for either a one page "leader" editorial or a shortish special report. In this case, it's both.

Finally! The "REAL" impact.
Website blurb:
Critics of video games say they encourage addiction and violence, but research does not support the claim ...

While I don't think it leads to much of a conclusion or is even terribly useful, I coincidently saw this today as well:

While I agree with Brad on the violence issue, there is some evidence to support that online game addiction is a real problem. China recently opened a government-owned clinic in the Beijing Military Region Central Hospital. A dozen doctors care for 14 to 24 year olds with extreme online video game addiction.
The larger question is what comes first, the addictive behavior patterns or the online game? There is very little scientific and/or sociological research being done on the subject. Like religion, people seem to be polarized and extremely passionate about the issue... Hm, sounds like a good thesis topic to me!
