What you're talking about is the relative perception of time, due to the player's attention. If for some reason a player was actively engaged in walking straight along a long bridge, and didn't care for doors and staircases, your Minecraft examples would swap.

I really like how you see a direct mapping from the control of space and action to the control of time; that feels right to me. I imagine you might achieve similar effects through music (intense vs calm) or color (warm vs cool).

What's our purpose in controlling the flow of time, though? Is it only for pacing, and cinematic effect?

Hm, the game is supposed to prompt you to press the space bar at key points. Do you have the latest version of Flash installed?

I found the slow motion very frustrating as a player, especially since the controls were pretty much limited to walking very slowly. Even though other actions were promised by the instructions for the space bar, ultimately there didn't seem to be any objects to interact with.

If you're going to slow down the world of the player, it seems like you need to provide a level of minute interactions that is at least as interesting as the world at "60 fps."
