Dungeon Master
SCA Lucas Building

1. Description
Dungeon Master is an interactive multi-player role-playing game experience integrating mobile technology into real world. In the game, the building turns into a dungeon in a fantasy world, where players explore to find treasures or defeat monsters. Also, it is possible for players to design own virtual fantasy world placing traps, monsters and puzzles wherever they want with the mobile device. The traps and puzzles are designed as interactive and physical entertainment fully implementing mobile technologies and smart building technologies. Players of this game and the building communicate each other through Android handset, RFID and surveillance cameras. Regarding the philosophy of the game, this game is focusing on the social behaviors of the players like a Massive Multi-player Online Role-Playing Game (MMO RPG). In this game, players can cooperate with each other to solve a complicated puzzle or defeat a big monster and also compete with each other to accomplish individual goals.

2. Re-creation of the real world

This interactive game is a combination between a digital mobile game and a physical game. Through the game, the real world is re-created on the player’s Android phone. The players of this game and the architecture communicate each other through Android phone, RFIDs, surveillance cameras.

3. Multi-player role playing game

This game is a role playing game. One player plays a dungeon master. The other players are the explorers of the dungeon. The dungeon master re-creates the building. He turns the building into a labyrinth in the fantasy world which has various traps and monsters. Also, he watches the explorers moving around through surveillance cameras and places traps, puzzles and monsters where they are to keep the explorers from the goal, which could be the dungeon master or a precious treasure. The explorers have numerous missions such as treasure hunting, puzzle solving and monster hunting in the game. Then can cooperate for a common objective communicating each other using the video communication of the Android phone.

4. Location-based game

The dungeon master can look through the structure of the dungeon and place traps and objects based on the building’s GPS data. Also, he can find out where the explorers are through GPS. The explorers can also check the map of the dungeon through GPS.

5. Game play with mobile device

All gameplays take place on the mobile platform. For example, when the explorer arrives at a specific spot like the door of a secret room where a puzzle event is supposed to happen, his Android phone screen shows the puzzle game and he has to solve the puzzle to open the door. Also, when the explorer fight a monster, the battle takes place on the phone. For various puzzles, all possible sensors on the phone are used. As the player plays the game, the game data such as skill points, experience points are recorded into the phone. So, when the player meets another player, he can see another player’s data on the phone screen with the data communication between the two phones the players have. In order words, if the player projects another player onto the phone screen with phone camera, he appears on the screen as a fantasy hero with his game data.

6. RFID

All players wear a special suit having RFID, which contains the player’s information such as class, special skills and background story. When the player reads other player’s RFID with the phone screen, the player can look up other player’s data on the phone screen.

7. Time traveling

The dungeon master can manipulate the surveillance cameras. Because the cameras deal with video data, he can look up the past events with the camera. By doing so, he can find out what the explorers did in the past and set up the strategy expecting the explorers’ path.

Dungeon Master – A Multi-Player Role Playing Experience Implemented with Mobile Phone and Smart Building Technologies

Project Description

Dungeon Master is an interactive multi-player role-playing game experience integrating mobile technology into real world. In the game, the building turns into a dungeon in a fantasy world, where players explore to find treasures or defeat monsters. Also, the building becomes a dungeon master in the game. It gives players quests and places traps, monsters and puzzles to keep treasures from the players. The traps and puzzles are designed as interactive and physical entertainment fully implementing mobile technologies and smart building technologies. Players of this game and the building communicate each other through Android handset, QR codes and surveillance cameras.

Goals

The goal of this game project is to explore the future of multi-player role-playing games using smart phone and smart building technologies.

Dungeon Master - Features

(1) Re-creation of the real world

This interactive game is a combination between a mobile game and a physical game. Through the game, the real world is re-created on the player’s Android handset. The players of this game and the architecture communicate each other through Android phone, RFID (or QR code), surveillance cameras.

(2) Multi-player role playing game

This game is a role playing game. Players become dungeon explorers and hunt treasures, fight monsters. The building, the dungeon master turns itself into a labyrinth in the fantasy world. Also, it watches the explorers moving around through surveillance cameras and places traps, puzzles and monsters where they are to keep the explorers from their goals, which could be a secret room of the dungeon or a precious treasure. The explorers have numerous missions such as treasure hunting, puzzle solving and monster hunting in the game. They can cooperate for accomplishing common objectives like solving complicated puzzles or defeating big dragons communicating each other with the video chatting of the Android phone.

(3) Interactive building

The building which players explore and fight against in this game has AI. Based on the information collected by various sensors like mood sensor, moisture sensor, light sensor and also surveillance cameras, it makes a strategy to obstruct players’ exploration and give players missions or quests. Also, in this game, the story is told by the building. Players can hear narrations from speakers installed in the building. The AI and the story of the building are exchangeable. In other words, the building could be a dungeon in a fantasy world or a fortress in WWII. Some electronic devices in the building such as electronic door lock will be reprogrammed for the game. For example, players can open a particular door only when they solve a puzzle cooperating with each other.

Photos of QR code scanning for events and missions

QR%20code_01.jpg

Most of missions and events of this game are activated with QR code scanning and RFID scanning. When the player scans his or her RFID card on an RFID reader or scans a QR code on the wall, they can see a mission or event alert on the handset screen.

Android has a very good QR code recognition module. By using it, we can show the event and mission to the player as soon as he or she scans a QR code without an image processing delay.

We've been working on an event generating module using this QR code recognition function now.
