Invisible Networks DS

As the launch of Nintendo DS approaches, the rumor mills churn. Some are speculating that the WiFi capabilities of the DS will allow it to extend ad-hoc networks created by other DS units. Imagine distributed networks of Nintendo DS units spontaneously forming in close proximity. I'm hoping this is more than rumor. It would definitely further help distinguish the difference between the DS and the PSP (as if having a second screen wasn't enough). I seriously think that the Game Innovation Lab should try to get a hold of a development kit for these things. Anyone have any contacts in Redmond?

if this is true, which it might be, the outcome in large and dense cities is going to be nothing short of groundbreaking.
i was trying to decide between a psp and a ds.. but this definitely is the deciding factor, i'm going with the ds, not to mention the game support and sega's secret game codenamed "the rubbing game"
:)

wow, I'm just imagining, trying to comprehend the scale to which...you are a huge geek, Aaron. They need a whole new magnitude of geekiness for you. That's ok though, it looks like you're in the right place for it.

And at least you're not an ugly geek.

Nintendo is a hard ass about licensing. I tried to get something going on last year for the GBA. As Nintendo put it to me " Due to the proprietary nature of our development tools, an academic setting is not a place we would be interested in partnering in." Basically they are scared of people coming and going with their secrets. Ad-hoc networks would be great and seem all too possible with the tech the DS boasts.

Readers: let it be known that Rosie practically begged to come along to the first annual Machinima Festival last year. She is a total geek herself and she loves it.

Erin: That's a pretty sucky attitude from Nintendo. Kind of strange given their affiliation with Digipen. Another thing I've noticed about the DS that seems less than cool: almost every title coming out for it this year is part of a franchise. Why isn't anyone (besides Sega and their rub-me game) making anything NEW for such a forward-looking piece of hardware?
