ITP Winter Show 2004

On Sunday, I went to check out the NYU Interactive Telecommunications Program Winter Show. Its all kind of a blur at this point, but there were many interesting projects on display. The one you see in the picture above is the sonictroller, a project where, using a midi keyboard and a microphone, two people can play Mortal Kombat 2. It made for a pretty amusing experience, but I couldn't hear the music that it was generating because that particular room was exceptionally noisy.

IMD celebrity Tripp Millican was in attendance. We both agreed that we absolutely need to have an event similar to this for our division to show our work at the end of the year.

i didnt realize i was such a celebrity. mad props to aaron for clueing me in to this show.

it was really interesting. i spoke to a lot of the people who had created stuff. amazing how much was done simply with max/msp.

the mortal kombat piece above was great. i went with a few friends and hearing them shout trash talk at each other to control the player was priceless.

(as was talking to the guy who built it and finding out he was using the midi sounds in to a max patch to a rewired n64 controller to the actual game. then aaron suggested using mame and doing it all in the computer and the guy, i think, felt stupid.)

the best piece though i think was the luggage one - a piece of hard carry-on luggage with sensors inside. bluetooth sent the info of the sensors to a max patch triggering sounds. so when someone kicked, moved, spun, etc the luggage, weird almost pikmin sounds emerged. pretty fun.

and yes. we must have an open house asap. i was hoping last semester we could have one, but as usual, things got out of hand.
