GLOW 08

This Saturday, July 19 during the monthly C.R.A.N.K mob extravaganza we will be stopping by GLOW in Santa Monica. Sounds like a cool summer event. I've never been (so if it's not so cool don't blame me!). So if you like crazy bike rides (and maybe drinking and jump roping and jousting on bicycles) C.R.A.N.K mob will be heading out that way. If not, you can use an old fashion car and head out to Santa Monica.

GLOW 08

Glow will fill the hours between dusk to dawn with compelling, enchanting and effervescent sights and sounds situated in spaces and times that expand possibilities for where, how and when the public experiences contemporary art.

July 19, 2008

7 pm - 7 am

From dusk to dawn, experience the Santa Monica beach, Pier and Palisades Park through the eyes and minds of artists. GLOW will fill the night with compelling, enchanting and effervescent sights and sounds situated in spaces and times that expand the possibilities for where, how and when the public participates in contemporary art.

Featuring over twenty temporary site specific installations and performances, Glow is entirely free to the public. This unique festival is made possible with major funding from the Norton Family Foundation, along with the Durfee Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and Starbucks Coffee Company, and other generous sponsors.

Glow is being produced by the City of Santa Monica in partnership with Bayside District, the Pier Restoration Corporation, and the Santa Monica Convention and Visitors Bureau. Part of the premise of Glow is the unique beach front setting and an homage to the grunion, a fish that lives in local waters and comes up to the beach to spawn creating a momentary 'glow'.

3D Haley

I was going through the blogs and found some pdfs in Hoberman's.
Unfortunately I have work when he has his 3D workshop, but here's a start.

This is Haley from Atlanta, Georgia. She's waiting with her luggage for an interview to get a full ride to USC's SCA. She knew I was taking the picture =]

LEDs, Brown tape, Acrylic, Plexiglass

So, my apartment has a HUGE lack of lights..that work anyway. Housing in my complex thought that lamps that rarely work were a good source of light, so big areas, such as my room and living room and closets at night are dark making it an issue for anyone to get work done without falling asleep. This was my last assignment for art-- my ideal interior space. I thought it fitting to light it up. Credits to Anthony Ko for helping figure out the LEDs. Hopefully we can get more lights, since this was last minute, we had 3 to work with. I never thought remembering high school physics would ever be useful for me, and now I am regretting not paying attention.

Anyway, I want to start working with lights. I think I am going to add a mirror and clean it up a bit...probably add white LEDs and slow them down...but this is what I have for now

Rise of the Videogame

So I was doing some laundry and finally had a chance to watch TV this year (ha..ha) and came across this and saw Tracy Fullerton =] and screamed out I KNOW HER!

anyway, you should try to catch this on the Discovery Channel. My mom saw it and is now realizes what it is we are doing and what we are trying to achieve. So if any of you still have parents that are skeptical about you going into video games instead of bio-pre-med like I said I would do...try to get them to sit down and watch this.

TV Schedule

The video game revolution has been under way for decades, progressing from simple amusements created in the 1950s to an all-pervasive force in today's popular culture that rivals — and will perhaps soon surpass — film and television. What began as a subculture pastime has evolved and transcended genres to become a unique form of expression impacting everything from modern warfare to interpersonal relationships.

Rise of the Video Game is a comprehensive and progressive exploration of the past, present and future of video games and video gamers. From the early days of Pong to today's ever-popular Halo 2, and from Atari 2600 to Nintendo to PlayStation, Rise of the Video Game tells the story of the people, the ideologies and the technology behind video games and how they have exploded into a cultural phenomenon. The evolution of gaming has seen the pendulum move from the days of games replicating society, to society replicating games. Featuring interviews with giants in the gaming industry of yesterday and today, this five-part series examines the evolution of the video game and its cultural impact on the world of entertainment today.

Joseph Wizenbaum

i was just looking for a cool wallpaper for my mac when i came across this =]
might be an interesting film

http://www.ilmarefilm.org/W_E_3.htm

"Joseph Weizenbaum (born January 8, 1923) is a professor emeritus of computer science at MIT. Born in Berlin, Germany to Jewish parents, he escaped Hitler's Germany in 1936, emigrating with his family to the United States. He started studying mathematics in 1941 in the US, but his studies were interrupted by the war, during which he served in the military.

Around 1950 he worked on analog computers, and helped create a digital computer for Wayne University. In 1963 took a position at MIT. In 1966, he published a comparatively simple program called ELIZA which demonstrated natural language processing by engaging humans into a conversation resembling that with an empathic psychologist. The program applied pattern matching rules to the human's statements to figure out its replies. (Programs like this are now called chatterbots.) Weizenbaum was shocked that his program was taken seriously by many users, who would open their hearts to it. He started to think philosophically about the implications of Artificial Intelligence and later became one of its leading critics.

His influential 1976 book Computer Power and Human Reason displays his ambivalence towards computer technology and lays out his case: while Artificial Intelligence may be possible, we should never allow computers to make important decisions because computers will always lack human qualities such as compassion and wisdom. This he sees as a consequence of their not having been raised in the emotional environment of a human family. Today he is Chairman of the Scientific Council at the Institute of Electronic Business in Berlin."

WWJP: What Would Jesus Play?

so i came across this funny article.

WWJP

"Ever wonder what kind of video games Jesus would play? Well, we sat down with everyone's favorite Nazarene and asked him just this. Oh, and Beelzebub stopped by just in time for us to talk to him before he had to raze some churches to the ground."

Trailer for GTA: IV

This didn't get my attention until it was counting down for about more than 45 seconds with each sound of the seconds ticking down. I mean, it is pretty ridiculous. So, as of right now it has been on for four minutes and there are 7 days 15hrs 53 minutes left and I have no idea how long this is going to go on for. I really wanted to finish that 70's show but it looks like that isn't going to happen. I must say, it is VERY effective with its annoyance because I had nothing else but to A) change the channel (which any normal person would do) B) check out the website (which probably most of IMD people would do). So, does anyone know when this madness stops? I don't know why, but it's frustrating. I want to see what happens. I HONESTLY think my TV is going to explode in 7 days (the ring???) . Chinese water torture. At least the internet sight doesn't have sound effects. So much for going to bed early.

comments from my suite mates:

"I feel like it's the end of the world"
"OR, it's like world war IV and they just skipped over III"
