An Ear-Opening Experience

I recently completed CTPR 540 “Intermediate Sound” taught by David Bondevelitch. The course is an intensive project-based class in sound design, supplemented by short lectures. The main assignment was to reconstruct all sounds from a 3-5 minute movie scene. A few animation students were also permitted to use their own projects. This may sound easy, but is actually extremely complex.

The primary software we used was the sound and music industry standard “Pro-Tools.” Students chose everything from the “Matrix” to the Original “Dracula.” We all helped each other with the Foley sessions to make our own body-hits, footsteps, cloth passes, etc. Casting actors for ADR/VO sessions were next, followed by backgrounds, FX, and musical score (if applicable). All the while, we edited the sounds into dozens of separate tracks. Finally, we mixed our projects to balance volumes and ad acoustical filters.

In many cases the selected scenes’ new soundtracks were reinterpreted and just as convincing as the originals. I strongly recommend CTPR 540 to all IM-MFA students!
