After acquiring the more arcade heavy portfolio of Taito a while back, Square-Enix looks like it's setting it's eyes on the new, but growing trend of RFID card games in the Japanese arcade sector. Besides the paper rock scissors double QR-Code based Dragon Quest Battle Road released last year, they've developed a new online arcade card system called NESYS (Taito Net Entry System), and have implemented it in a variety of titles including; Eternal Wheel, Aquarian Age Alternative, and even a cockpit style shooter based on HL2 called Half Life 2: Survivor.
While the gameplay itself is nothing terribly new (Most of the gameplay for both the party action RPG based Aquarian Age and Eternal Wheel look and feel an awful lot like Sangokushi Taisen and Tower of Druaga Online, but with an emphasis on small squad tactics), it's comforting to see that more and more developers are jumping on what I think is the next big trend in gaming. The hope now is that there will be a cheap, accessible, but still fun (Looking at you Eye of Judgment) home alternative that can be developed to take advantage of this system in the West.
