Reactivity, Interactivity, and Dialogue

What's the difference between Interaction and Reaction?

Does interactivity imply intelligence?
Does reaction imply lack of intelligence?

A system reacts to input with a message.

To move beyond reaction, does the message need to be from an intelligent system? If the system isn't intelligent, can the message be considered interaction if it is at least derived from an intelligent author / programmer? How are the experiences of these systems different?

What are the differences between intelligent messages and meaningful messages?

How is a meaningful and intelligent interaction different from an interaction that is simply meaningful?

Differences and Relationships to explore:

Reaction / Interaction / Dialogue
Intelligence / Meaning

Reactivity - implies response to stimulus
Interactivity - implies reciprocal action upon each other, a two way flow of information.
Dialogue - implies a conversation between two people or intelligent entities.

Meaning
- convey, denote
- symbolize, signify
- intention
- importance, value.

Intelligence
- the ability to learn or understand or to deal with new or trying situations : reason. also : the skilled use of reason.
- the ability to apply knowledge to manipulate one's environment or to think abstractly as measured by objective criteria.
- Intentionality.

have you seen Robeky's "trasforming mirrors" article?

You may want to check out Comm Theory Journals. Annenberg has a resource center with copies of most comm journals published. It's 'supposedly' restricted to Annenberg students, but you could ask nicely.

For more updated/digital references, try the electronic journals available to USC (need to be on an sc server, or at least simulate that you are) http://www.usc.edu/isd/elecresources

I had skimmed "Transforming Mirrors", but I'll definitely take a closer look. Thanks a lot for the links Julie.

Yes, I have been trying to deal with this issue in deal with old interactive TV and a new form of reactive TV content, we believe that you could create using MPEG4 as object oriented TV. In interactive TV, you as user have to interact with the content stream, like browsing. In reactive TV content the presentation of the content would changed as reaction to various inputs, such as network, terminals, users profiles, etc. Reactive TV seems to be more of what you want TV to be, a sit-back and enjoy media. You don't want to interact with a TV, anymore than horse-rider wants a horse to talk back, you want it to be responsive to your desires.
