Amen Break

amen.jpg

Some of you have likely seen this, but it's still worth revisting, its content quite relevant to us as we work towards mastery of digital arts. Electronic artist Nate Harrison dives deep into the Amen breakbeat, sampling culture, and copyright law in an audio installation from last year.

Yea I saw this over the summer. I think as an installation, its kinda lame. Its a record playing the artist's monologue in a room. So what?

However, the actual content is a really great historical survey of the Amen break's use in music.

On the other hand, if you dig through Harrison's site, you'll find this infinitely superior (in my opinion) video documenting the history of the Roland TB-303: http://www.nkhstudio.com/pages/popup_bassline.html

Rather than posture as an "installation", its actually a video that uses images to illustrate the points Harrison makes! Not just a record spinning around! Anyway, a lot of his other stuff is cool and worth digging for too.

Yeah...the content is great; the installation...eh. I feel the same way about the bassline "installation" as well.

Well speaking of copyright law... I'd thought I'd make some Lessig posts and a few other linkies:
