A little 12 tone music prototype (updated)

(updated) Instructions: Click on the instruments or pairs of instruments for sound. If a pair of instruments is parallel to each other, they will play the same permutation. If perpendicular, they'll play different rows.

It’s pretty simple: a tone row is played tutti at the beginning, then you can cue individual instruments or combinations of instruments by pressing the various blue buttons. The little flash applet randomly chooses the permutation of the tone row every time you click: it can start on any note and be the original permutation, inversion, retrograde, or retrograde inversion. I think it’s pretty neat, especially with the fact that the sounds, as compressed as they are, are pretty realistic and mix well together.

Basically, I wanted people to experience 12 tone music, seeing as it’s a thing that many people of this generation just have no clue about, while also experiencing this sort of realistic and interactive classical music sound at their fingertips, which is another thing that most people just don’t have access to outside of being in an orchestra (or having a thousand or more US dollar sound library).

I have Flash 8.5, and this does not appear to be working.

I love how eveyone talks so much shit about Flash, and now look how many IMD people are executing projects in it, halarious.

I look forward to playing your prototype.

hitting up the swf seems to work ( http://www.apocalypsewow.com/random/12tone_9.swf ) but the embedded thing isn't working for me either, flash 8.x. I tried to muck around a little on the swf, but without the browser resizing it's all wonked up, visually.

Got it working (I hope!). Funky object code making things annoying...

Thanks for the clue Will. Still doesn't work on my Mac w/ Firefox, but it did work last eve in the IML on one of the PCs after a few reloads.

So I just dialed up the swf as suggested. This really cool. The loops overlay really well, and definitely gave me a feeling that I was composing, despite the fact that I was pointing and clicking. Kinda feels like a Symphonic 'drum' machine.

Seems really Holtz or Brahms inspired, at least to my laymen ears.

You can do allot with audio in Flash these days, I look forward to seeing this experiment develop.
