Aquarium Project Idea

humaniquarium.jpg

I think it will be interesting to make a space inside an aquarium where people are the subject to be watched by fish instead of the other way around. By the way, the name "Humaniquarium" is from Justin. I simply came up with available techniques we already have or not difficult to implement with hardwares we have in our lab. There are a big projector screen in the center and two monitors. As you can see from the drawing above two web cam capture people in front of them and send the data to main PC which is in the center. The main PC converts data from web cams into two different textures and renders them on the surface of two humaniquarium buildings. Also it analyses texture data and find specific colours from them to generate interactions between players and the virtual fishes. The colours can be from the T-shirt of the players or any objects designed to be hand-held and move around the camera. Also another 2 PC receives data from the main pc and renders fishes with different angle to mimic the feeling of the player's being inside the humaniquarium and being watched by the fishes. We can make interesting interactions of fishes using this color scheme and also it is possible to make a simple multiplayer game between 2 areas like a game to attract more fishes to the player's humaniquarium than the other one.

Technical issues
(These are all available now or not difficult to implement soon.)
- Using 2 web cam inputs to generate textures for different objects in 3D world.
- Analysing textures to find out specific regions of colours and using them to make interactions between players and virtual fishes.
- Networking between 3 LAN connected PCs.(1 server/2 client)
- 3D engine to render various contents and play music/sound.

A current Exhibit at the London Zoo:
"Warning: Humans in their Natural Environment" read the sign at the entrance to the exhibit, where the captives could be seen on a rock ledge in a bear enclosure, clad in bathing suits and pinned-on fig leaves. Some played with hula hoops, some waved."
