Demoscene

(This probably isn't too impressive for my first entry, but hopefully the more interesting stuff will come later....)

Many thanks to Vince, who introduced me to the European graphic Demoscene some Months ago. I'm really interested in procedurally generated artistic content, and I have to believe that this is the ultimate goldmine of skill and expertise. These guys produce entertainment content in a friendly rivalry without any kind of funding or real reward system. Still they produce amazing technical and artistic feats.

My personal favorite group right now is probably "Conspiracy". I like their more conservative content. They tend to use a lot of cooler colors, and use slower jazzy music as well as a lot of the flashy techno content of a lot of the other demosceners.

I hope everyone will take some time to check out some of this stuff. It's really just kind of fun and relaxing. I'm particularly interested in the 64k intro group. These things are technically amazing. They're graphic demos with the restriction that the executable be no larger than 64 kilobytes. You can't include any static imagery or sound, or DLL's either. The great thing is that some of these tiny files translate to amazingly detailed pieces that last several minutes.

There's a group called farbrausch who really pioneered the modern demoscene of people creating tools and engines and representing complicated shapes as collections of simple shapes plue some kind of mathematical operation that transforms the shape into something morew interesting. Most of their demos are particularly good.
