Heather Desurvire (hdesurvire)

Heather Desurvire, principal and owner of Behavioristics is an experienced Game Usability expert whose work on a multitude of products has influenced optimal user experience design, as well as has influenced current methodologies through published work. These have added to the knowledge base of usability research, and game user research. She also is so pleased to be a part of the USC interactive media program, teaching Game Usability! She has also worked on various projects within the department, such as the social media health project and the Shaffalah center project. Heather Desurvire has been an invited speaker at many professional conferences, events, and workshops both Internationally and in the U.S. Samplings are such as, Game Connectionin Paris, including attendees from Ubisoft, Cross Media Interaction in Stockholm, Ongame in Stockholm, GUR in San Francisco, and is an invited speaker at the upcoming InPlay and Big Design conference. As a practitioner, her clients benefit from Ms. Desurvire’s wealth of knowledge and experience with many Fortune 500/100 companies, US Government and top Fortune 100/500 companies such as Motorola, Intuit, Citibank (their analysts’ technology User Interface in their Headquarters in NY), Blizzard, Electronic Arts, AOL, Yahoo, Nortel, Samsung, Microsoft, Buena Vista Games, Nickelodeon, Electronic Arts (Pogo), Science Alberta (Canadian Education games for kids, top publishers and studios, such as Disney Online, THQ publishers, Electronic Arts, Blizzard, Electronic Arts, Ridemakerz, Littlest Petshop Online, Heavy Iron, Relic, Disney Interactive, LucasArts, Sega, Creative Assembly and many more. She has worked both on consumer and serious games on all platforms. She has worked on multiple genres of products from educational applications, cell phones, consumer and B-to-B websites, and online and console games on all platforms. Ms. Desurvire’s early work pioneered research on methodologies for evaluating the usability of user interfaces. A summary of her research work is published in “Usability Inspection Methods” (John Wiley and Sons, edited by J. Nielsen and R. Mack) and recently for the usability, playability and learning in games, “Evaluating User Experience for Games”, (Springer, 2010). Her extensive research work has appeared in journals and conferences, such as the HCI, INTERACT, IEEE, and CHI. IEEE 2009 paper was voted best paper at the conference. She is on the Board of Directors for Game User Research SIG (GUR), and co-chaired the GUR (Game User Research) Summit at GDC in 2011. Her current research involves developing principles for helping game developers design better access for learning in their game designs for newer gamers.
