Console Numbers
Never really been into handheld games so I was blown away when I came across these stats in this month's issue of XBN magazine.
54 million GameBoy Advances?! Where have I been?
Now, I'm that much more intrigued by the PSP...

Get with it Herb! GBA rocks the motha-fuckin house. I'm an avid player myself, sure besides Will, Tripp, Tracey, and I, most of the people I see rockin them are 12 year olds. The thing is really friggin cool. Pick one up, the PSP won't hold a candle to it, and is projected at 350% of the GBAs' retail price!

Yah - the GBA is a major major seller, and if you count the first GameBoy, then you're looking at well over 100 million units. That's why Nintendo is still in business, going somewhat strong, after the relative failure of the GameCube.
And it's also why Nintendo is like the Apple computer of video games - everyone likes their portable device (iPod/GBA) which they use to push convergeance with their hardware platform (Macintosh/GameCube). They manage some pretty neat integration between the two - I can't wait to see what happens with the wireless, touchscreen capacity of Nintendo's DoubleScreen. It's a much more innovative piece of gaming hardware than the PSP - viva Nintendo!

Dual Screen justin, dual screen...it just sounds so much more edgey! *Yay for marketing!* Anyway, the Mac/Nin comparison is a fairly good one, as it is definitely a flagship company with a very nice tang all of it's own. As a kid growing up and having had one hooked into my brain from age 8, it has it's appeals. (characters, sounds, colors, etc)
The GameBoy Advance as a unit has done well I think in part due to it's impecable (sp?) timing. It's hit the SNES aged crowd in the groin with a nice retro feel. It just makes me salivate to think I can play Mario 1,2,3 on one. But if you want to jump on the portable bandwagon, here's my advice...
Wait till the DS comes out, then purchase a GBA SP on the cheap. Pick up a few of the first gen titles to come out for it, maybe even some original GB games like Zelda, Links Awakening (backwards compatible man!) and have yourself a blast. The days of old will come creeping back like a bad Freddy Nightmare, and it will suck you in all over again.
