L.A. is s l o w l y returning to whatever passes for normal, by some miracle I have resurrected my little laptop, and the calendar's reminding me that I was born; I am going to celebrate by exercising my right to speak about nothing in particular.
So without further ado, three thoughts inspired by an afternoon alone in the rush hour traffic with the radio station KBIG 104 on full blast. These facts will be listed in ascending order of embarrassing-ness.
1) I am pretty sure A-Ha's "Take on Me" has been playing continuously since it was released, somewhere in the world. It has never gone completely silent. Sometimes it is on a record player in some lonely German kid's basement, other times a bored national DJ throws it down for a change of pace. Other songs feel more or less appropriate to their time, rise and fall in the zeitgeist: only "Take On Me" has stayed in its weird position, neither out of style nor exactly IN, since 1985.
2) The music video for Fergie's "Big Girls Don't Cry" is TERRIBLE. I actually don't mind the song, its sort of catchy and if I'm VERY ALONE I will happily hum along to it. But, through the obsession of Belinda, I have been exposed to the video a few times, and I've slowly gotten more and more frustrated. I mean, the song is clearly about some girl outgrowing her boyfriend. Clearly. But the music video is about.... what? Some guy (Peter Petrelli?) who's addicted to smack, and OD'ed, leaving Fergie all alone in a revealing tanktop [update: this was a false memory. Fergie is wearing a revealing man's dress shirt]. So what, she's mourning a dead junkie and talking about how "it has nothing to do with him?" That is thematically inappropriate. Fergie's music video, you should know better. Shame on you.
3) This is my darkest secret: I am not proud of it, but everyone knows that one your birthday you are supposed to reveal your darkest secret, so here goes: Sometimes, when I'm alone in my car, I wonder "if Nickelback has a greatest hits album or something that I could maybe buy".
Phew, I feel better now. Time to start being twenty-six.

Happy (belated!) Birthday, and you're right on the Nickelback thing. I had a station on Pandora.com this summer set to ridiculous metal. It helped me turn off my brain and get to it at work. And then this song came on, and it was all pretty much over for the day.
I think I've acquired every learning disability known to man after listening to that song.
