Like much of the game-lovin' internet, I stumbled onto a treasure trove of nonsense a few months ago via this Penny Arcade link. Who would have thought that the exploits of Garfield could actually be used for comedy?
I had my fill of "Lasagna Cat" after one day, but I've occasionally checked back on Garfield Minus Garfield, and today I noticed some pretty unbelievable news.
For those too lazy to link:
"NEW YORK, NY – July 30, 2008 – Paws, Inc. and Ballantine Books, a division of the Random House Publishing Group, announced last week at Comic-Con International that Ballantine will publish a book inspired by the popular webcomic Garfield Minus Garfield."
You have to give Jim Davis credit for knowing how to take a joke, even if he's shaky on how to tell one. Most of the time, when a copyright infringement like Garfield Minus Garfield hits the mainstream, we can expect a cease-and-desist. Instead, the monolithic enterprise behind these movies has decided to bring the off-beat homage to Jon Arbuckle into the fold. I hope we see more of that attitude.
