Monday Workshops @ IMD — Making Dynamic Web Pages

Styrofoam Keyboards

The workshop will be held in the ZML (RZC 201) from 1-5p.

This workshop teaches the basic-basics of creating dynamic web pages. Creating data— and network— enabled browser-based experiences defines in many ways what people mean when they say “Web 2.0.” From a technical perspective, much of this involves manipulating the web presentation using other network and database resources. We will be using Ruby to program database driven web pages and cover the basics of setting up a database and creating web pages that manipulate data in a database. At the end of this workshop you will know how to use your IMD web page and database. Requires a networked laptop or some other means of running Ruby on Rails either on your own server, under your Interactive Media Division web account _or_ through your own installation of "Ruby on Rails" on your own computer (see instructions below.) Email bleecker at usc dot edu to sign up.

It is recommended that you either install a Ruby on Rails environment on your own computer or prepare such if you have access to your own web server. Most Interactive Media Division students have an account on the interactive.edu server.

Otherwise, and perhaps recommended, would be installing the environment we'll be using in the workshop on your own computer.

The Monday Workshops @ IMD are a series of weekly short topic workshop on tools, skills and techniques for interactive media. The workshops are designed to be intensive and hands-on introductions to a variety of topics — to get you over that initial, sometimes daunting learning curve that many interactive media tools and techniques present.

Hurrah! Thanks for running this workshop Julian - it's great to see some lightweight web service prototyping might be taking place at the IMD.

I'm with a startup now and we can't find enough Ruby on Rails-fluent people to work with.
