Monday Workshops @ IMD — Interactive Media: The Telephone

Carved Phone

October 1 — Interactive Media: The Telephone
Instructor: Professor Julian Bleecker (julian @ techkwondo.com)
Just about everyone has a telephone, and there's one simple programming language for them all — it's called VXML (Voice XML). It's what the banks and customer service people use to program their NPCs that talk to you when you call in and get put on hold..or worse. This workshop will describe how you can use VXML to create your own interactive nightmare call-in scenarios, or perhaps something more fun.

Requires you bring a laptop with network connectivity. Limited to 12 students. Email the instructor to sign up (julian at techkwondo com)

The Monday Workshops @ IMD are a series of weekly short topic workshop on tools, skills and techniques for interactive media. The workshops are designed to be intensive and hands-on introductions to a variety of topics — to get you over that initial, sometimes daunting learning curve that many interactive media tools and techniques present.

As always, the current line up of workshops can be found on the IMD Wiki, here:

Designing Interactive Narratives using the Korsakow System
Professor Steve Anderson
Note that this will not be held at the ZML.

An introduction to the Korsakow System, an easy-to-learn tool for creating interactive narratives that does not require actual databases or programming knowledge. Korsakow is useful for rapid prototyping of interactive narrative structures or creating web-publishable projects using video clips and a keyword-based associational structure.

Please Note! The workshop will take place at the Institute for Multimedia Literacy (aka the "other" IML) at 746 W. Adams Blvd. Mac G5 computers will be available. If you prefer to work on your own laptop, please download the Korsakow software (PC or Mac) at: http://www.korsakow.com/ksy

Monday Workshops At IMD: September 10 1-5p, ZML User Tutorial

Arduino Workshop

Introducing a series of weekly short topic workshop on tools, skills and techniques for interactive media. The workshops are designed to be intensive and hands-on introductions to a variety of topics — to get you over that initial, sometimes daunting learning curve that many interactive media tools and techniques present.

Some of these workshops are techniques for “sketching” interactive media project ideas and concepts. Others are focused on the important professional skills you will need as an interactive media practitioner. All of these are skills-based sessions, introducing fundamentals of the interactive media craft.

Our first workshop is a user tutorial for the ZML. Your instructors will be Marientina Gotsis and Peter Preuss.

All first year IMD grad are required to attend this September 10 workshop.

September 10 — Zemeckis Media Lab (ZML) User Tutorial (1-5p)
Instructor: Marientina Gotsis and Peter Preuss
This workshop will first walk you through the technical capabilities of the Zemeckis Media Lab and how it can be used for creative collaboration, teaching and meeting management. In the second half of the workshop, you will be introduced to past, present and future opportunities to create content such as still and dynamic panoramas, multi-screen gaming, video streaming, managing the projectors, video/audio playback, etc.

A partial schedule is available here. Announcements for workshops will appear here and via email the week prior to the upcoming workshop. Don't miss out!
