It's about Time...

Nielsen Goes To College

Nielsen Media Research says it will include college students in its national TV ratings early next year, marking the first time that the company is adding viewing outside the home to its ratings results.

The company will measure viewing for students living in dorms, sorority and fraternity houses and off-campus apartments. Nielsen considers this to be “extended home” viewing, since participants are members of Nielsen households that have moved away for college.

Nielsen has been testing its college student ratings for two years with the support of major broadcast and cable networks, including The WB, CBS, Fox, MTV Networks, ESPN and Turner Broadcasting.

Early results show that networks could pick up significant viewership with the added college students. In the 2004-05 school year, college students living away from home watched an average of 24.3 hours of TV per week, Nielsen says. That heavy consumption could result in as much as 12% higher viewing levels among adults 18 to 24, the company estimates, translating to ratings increases of 0.2 to 1.0 rating point per show.

“Including college viewing in the national ratings will give our clients a more complete picture of television viewing, particularly among young adults,” Sara Erichson, general manager, national services for Nielsen Media Research, said in a statement. “Nielsen is continuously striving to improve the accuracy and completeness of its measurements. Expanding the National sample to include out-of-home college students is one of many initiatives we are pursuing.”

Nielsen has been testing a similar sample for viewing in second homes, but a Nielsen spokesperson said the results were not significant enough to include in the national sample.

But the company is not measuring “out of home” viewing in public places such as bars, offices and restaurants. Currently, the only ratings system that is able to capture that type of viewing is Arbitron’s Portable People Meter, a pager device that detects viewing wherever the participant travels while wearing the PPM. Nielsen is involved in the service’s current test in Houston.

Gotta Get One Of These

Two-For-One TV

050714_2_1.gif

Sharp in Japan took the wraps off of a new liquid-crystal display (LCD) that can actually let someone watching from the right see a different image than someone viewing it from the left.

Dubbed “two-way viewing angle” LCD, it could put an end to arguments over what to watch or even let one person use it as a PC screen while someone else uses the other half as a TV screen (or, it can provide a one-screen solution for the two-screen interactive experience that is popular with organizations like ABC Sports).

More importantly, while usually these demos are of something that won’t hit the streets for months, if not years, Sharp will begin mass producing it next month.

Pricing is expected to be about twice that of a single LCD screen.

One problem? If you watch it from directly in front, the two images overlap, so it might not be ideal for the average home.

But, says Sharp, it could be useful for use in a car, letting the driver view a map while the passenger can watch a movie, or at stores where it can promote two different products from one screen.

New feature idea for SECT

Rob Thomas(the creator of Veronica Mars, and NOT the matchbox 20 guy) is a brilliant man. He posted commentary on the pilot on his website for everyone to download. Basically because they had to make a decision on the first season DVD to either release it pretty bare bones or release it well after season 2 started. They made a good decision to release it early, though the release ended up getting pushed back because of heavy competition from Lost and DH, but its still out well before the season gets going.(It released today—buy it) Lots of people were disappointed by this, so he did this commentary. Yeah, RT loves the fans.

But this is a GREAT idea for SECT. The could provide further commentaries for episodes, but so could fans! And upload it for everyone to hear. And people could comment on it etc. A great way to tie the awesome season 1 into the program. They could produce some for season two episodes or the clips too. I was close to this idea when I thought of video and audio commenting, but I hadn’t thought of fashioning it after a commentary. I have heard so many raves over Alias Season One, because one of the last episodes all the actors were in one room doing commentary and everyone loved it because it was very lively. I would love it if users, maybe those who have VM nights with multiple participants, would do these social, collaborative commentaries. And maybe it could incorporate a way for them to do it virtually, to connect with their not real life friends. Basically the same idea as chats but the next level…

So, I am supposed to be paring this down into something manageable, but I think I am going to add this to my list. maybe even choose it as one of the features I do for the thesis part of it. should be easy enough.

Please, can I have this???

Job Ad May Provide Clues on Google's Plans for ITV

A job ad on Google's Web site that seeks a product manager for "GoogleTV" may provide some clues on the search engine giant's plans to enter the interactive TV space: "In this role," the ad reads, "you will provide leadership on product vision and execution of projects that enable using Google's search and advertising technologies to enhance users' television viewing experience. This is a leadership role that combines entrepreneurship, strategy formulation, product development, project management and communication to internal and external audiences. You will identify key market trends that are shaping user behavior when watching television. These include but are not limited to the intersection of Internet and television technologies, Video-On-Demand, Personal Video Recorders and emergence of next-generation set-top-boxes with IP connectivity. You will then identify areas where use of Google's search and advertising technology can enhance this user experience and define appropriate products to deliver these user benefits. You will work with UI designers and software engineers to conceptualize and develop these features. You will also manage a cross-functional team of engineering, marketing, sales, legal, finance and support functions to launch these products successfully in the marketplace. You will be responsible for driving this team to successfully accomplish product and business milestones. You will act as the internal and external spokesperson for these products and be responsible for its overall success. As part of this role, you may also be required to interact with strategic partners in the telecom and cable segments across the world. As part of these interactions you will be required to present product and business strategy to senior executives at these companies and work with them to deploy these products in their network."

Qualifications required of candidates for the position include "experience developing/launching products in one or more of the following areas: interactive TV, set-top boxes, personal video recorders, video-on-demand, IPTV or cable TV technologies," as well as "experience developing and/or marketing Internet products and technologies."

Real Time Chat with Television - an experiment

I am conducting an experiment for my thesis this WEDNESDAY in the ZML and would like to invite everyone to participate!

What: Everyone will join a single chat, then run a 'back channel' to a live television feed. The chat will be saved and analyzed and the entire experience will be videotaped (so everyone look pretty).

Who: Everyone! Please!

Why: To explore the dialogue that emerges and try out elements of play in this environment

When: We will begin at 9pm and watch a television show live. There are several options, please vote in the comments if you have a preference.

CSI (CBS, repeat, last season)
Lost (ABC, season premiere)
America's Next Top Model (UPN, hour 2 of season premiere)
Mythbusters (Discovery Channel)
The West Wing (Bravo, from 2000)

There will be open-ended question sheets handed out at the end of the hour, which are optional.

To sweeten the pot, I will bring cookies!
