keeping my pen wet
Earlier this month I interviewed game designer Doug Church for a piece that just went up on Gamasutra.com today, the website of Game Developer Magazine. He waxes passionate on the potential for play over entertainment, good ideas to keep in mind as we're hearing so much about the importance of story in the Cinema school. Church has a design philosophy about games that emphasizes verbs, giving the player new forms of agency, and I believe this is more intrinsic to the highest potential of interactive media, and games in particular.

AI researcher Robin Hunicke was there too; she took photos and annotated the conversation somewhat on her blog gewgaw: Press, Part II. The interview took place while the three of us were at a conference on "Play" in Vancouver; Church was pressed for time and I was distracted so we finally commenced the interview in the cab on the way to the airport, and at gate 73 as he was waiting for his flight to board. Robin took the photo from the airport here on this page.
