DIY MMOG
I'm about halfway through this masters program studying Interactive Design at USC. As I delve deeper into possible thesis topics, I want to understand what kinds of tools I can use to build out my ideas.
Here's a terrific blog post covering the emergence of widely-available build-your-own massively-multiplayer online game engines: "Make Your Own Virtual Worlds." The post is written by Richard Bartle, a storied name in the MMOG field, and a number of other online gaming heavy-hitters analyze the engines he lists in the comments. The engine that has him most excited is Multiverse, started by some ex-Netscape people with a non-commercial approach: free tools, they only make money if you do. A nice idea, and something that helped me imagine building an MMOG for the next eighteen months.
