Middleware companies look to GDC as the best place to reach their audience, the game developer. Since developers come to hear what made their colleagues’ lives easier, these companies hope they can be part of the conversation. This also means that the Expo floor is often an indicator of oversaturated markets. Last year, amid the rage of the [...] -

GDC’s Expo floor is host to hundreds of companies, showing off everything from awesomely-fast motion capture to AI pathfinding companies , and everything in between. The floor is also host to states and countries vying for a piece of the industry – Showing off generous tax incentives or top-rate education programs, in the hope that talent comes and stays in [...] -

I’ve always enjoyed explaining my Indian roots to friends and strangers. It feels like I’m opening a bond with another first-world native, and I become this portal to another lifetime, a key to visualizing a world they only read about in newspapers or saw glimpses of in Slumdog Millionaire . For this reason, I have begun to see [...] -

When you buy FIFA 11 – ”Most realistic soccer game EVER!!!”
When FIFA 12 starts to come out – ”FIFA 11 didn’t have real-time ball physics. Nobody does. To get that, you need FIFA 12, the BEST SOCCER GAME EVER!!!”

Hey all! Jason here from out there in internet-land (read: Hemet, CA). Hope all’s well over there!
I have a question for Chris about kill.switch. I was a big fan of the game when it came out, and I remember playing the demo for hours.
Chris,
As you know, the cover mechanic ended up becoming a watershed in shooter games, yet it became known as the ’Gears of War mechanic.’ kill.switch came up with a truly desired innovation, yet it didn’t end up becoming a franchise. I’m wondering if you have any thoughts on why.Along those lines, is there something you wish that Namco (as studio and as publisher) should have added that would have, in your opinion, changed the game’s perception and led it to be a bigger success? Multiplayer? Extra polish time? greater emphasis on story and/or marketing?

Yeah, I was surprised when he said ”yeah, there are PC games, but console games look for a deeper experience.” Um, I’m sorry, what?

I imagined Umbilicus as a place that existed around a dead volcano. As I built it, I began to imagine that the small recess around this volcano would not be enough for the small society to live on, and that there would be issues of foraging to find food and appropriate housing. So, I imagined a [...] -

(Note: This post is for CTIN 532: World Building.) Umbilicus is a vast land covered with dense jungles, like an Amazon rainforest. Within this rainforest sit complex ruins of a society, completely empty. Somehow, the rainforest has not engulfed the area, and only plains and moss surround the giant stone buildings. This area, however, is not [...] -

It seems the blog does not understand spaces between paragraphs. This makes my writing style quite a bit less readable. Will have to fix this.

Frank Herbert’s Dune contains a massive story, epic in scale yet intimate in storytelling. It spawned numerous sequels, as large, if not larger, than the Star Wars universe. Yet it all centers around one planet, Arrakis, because it exports a drug as valuable to the galaxy as oil is to our world. What is clever about this [...] -

Because apparently that’s how realistic the physics were that you could do that in-game. That was all in-game, supposedly. Never played the game to find out
