Computer Eye Strain: How to Relieve It

At my internship this fall, I have been assigned the task of combing over a gigantic spreadsheet that contains all of the dialogue in an upcoming game, and checking that every last line is on the "approved dialogue" document.

And, for the first time, I am experiencing Computer Eye Strain. How do office people deal?

I found a helpful link on the subject, and thought I would share it with my computer colleagues.

Are you reading it on a CRT or flatpanel? I used to get eyestrain pretty badly when I had a CRT.

Yea... if you are on a CRT, bump up the refresh rate... it probably supports up to 80hz. I think I'm more sensitive to this than others, but I'm always coming across people's CRT's that have the refresh rate set down at 50hz and to my eyes, its ridiculously flickery and I can't handle it.

I've been experiencing computer eye/back strain since '96 :) Two of the most important things on that list that i always ignore:

- resting eyes 10 mins every hr and focusing on far away things
- keeping my monitors slightly below eye level

Also, the ambient brightness does make a difference. I've got one of those GE 2D lamps now, and it was def worth the price tag. The light bulb puts out the equivalent of 3 incandescent (60W) light bulbs, while using up a fraction of the energy. (http://www.ge.com/ph/light_flores.htm)
