SECOND LIFE: A Pyramid Scheme?

Via Kotaku, Article on Valleywag

". . .We concluded that we weren't playing in a market at all. We were suckered in by a classic pyramid scheme, albeit one with a pretty new user interface. New entrants plow real money into the game. Only the guys at the top can extract that money with any volume (and in excess of the risk-free rate of return). Attempts to move anything more than token amounts out of the game generally result in real-returns of almost exactly the prevailing USD deposit interest rate. "

TransFormations II: The Perception of Perception FREE

Fri Jan 19 - Sat Jan 20

TransFormations is a year-long series of events formed around four specific topics, each at the crossroads of four larger umbrella themes: art, technology, cognition and perception. From big-budget Hollywood to a 19th-century panorama, TransFormations 2: The Perception of Perception will feature a series of speakers, panels, workshops and exhibits tracing three interwoven strands through the fields of cognition, perspective and stereoscopy--no one attending these events will see the world the same way again.

In today's data-saturated and digitally mediated world, questions of how we perceive and know the world around us have taken on a new urgency. Our ideas and experience are formed by our perception of the world. How have these perceptions been shaped through past and newly-emerging media technologies? This event will explore a variety of these media and their impact on the domains of art, philosophy, cognitive science and neuroscience in a kaleidoscopic festival event with multiple perspectives, multiple sites and multiple levels of access.

GDC Mobile Announces Mobile Game Innovation Contest

MOBILE GAME INNOVATION HUNT

The Mobile Game Innovation Hunt will give 12-15 mobile developers and publishers the opportunity to pitch their most innovative game to a panel of expert judges (U.S. and international operators TBA) and the audience in three-minutes!

Judges confirmed to date:
- Joe Ariganello, Product Manager of Games, Sprint Nextel

Showcasing your mobile game will give it broad exposure and critical feedback.

The session will be held on Monday, March 5 from 5-6PM in Room 134 at Moscone North and will be hosted by Matthew Bellows and David Collier.

Submit your game today to be one of the lucky finalists to participate in the Mobile Game Innovation Hunt and take home cool prizes, prestige, and the recognition from your colleagues! This session promises to be loads of fun, you won't want to miss it!

flOw won't be at Slamdance after all.

Last week, Peter Baxton, President of Slamdance, decided to pull the game "Super Columbine Massacre RPG" out of the contest, as a personal decision "based on moral grounds and concern for the future of the organization."

The flOw team has decided to protest this act by withdrawing from the festival. This was a very difficult decision, but it came down to not whether we like SCMRPG or not (we are pretty evenly split on this), but that we cannot condone or leave unchallenged an act which we feel sets a terrible precedent. Please read our announcement here.
