Bolas said that I should be looking more at the performance aspects of my thesis... so stumbling across this tonight was convenient:

Tactic is a patented handcrafted wooden instrument that allows users to physically interact with live multimedia such as video for performance, recording, installation and presentation. Tactic introduces physical expression to multimedia creation by allowing the user to be separate from their computer while creating.

or if you really want to get crazy, the icube system is sweet -- can plug basically anything into it to use as a midi controller: http://i-cubex.com/catalog/index.php
but those may not be what you are looking for.

It's also very expensive (2999) for something that I could easily build myself. I think they're going for the "handcrafted" instrument look, which is an interesting approach for a technology product. The most interesting aspect of this is that apparently this company feels there are enough people doing video mixing that they can market a product specifically for it.

yeah, you've hit in on the head -- it's amazing that someone has risked a lot in the belief there is a market for a $2999 video mixer.
