sigh...

Well it's been about a week... you know what that means!

I am posting.

Calm yourselves. I have nothing interesting to say today.

If you are morbidly curious about a neurotic psychic landscape manifested as text, then go here:

Be careful with your assumptions. Not all writers are autobiographers.

Blogs are not people. I am not my blog. You have not met me after reading it.

If you reference my blog in a conversation with me, I may continue the dialogue that began on the web or I may claim to have no idea what you are talking about.

If you read my blog, you do not necessarily understand me and you probably have no additional insight into my identity.

If you are offended, saddened or moved in any way by my blog (even if you love it, hate it... or it loves or hates you for that matter), then you will have to figure out for yourself what that means in the context of your own life and how you wish to react now that you have an intimate emotional relationship with a blog.

My blog is not your friend.

Other than that... enjoy.

Techno-vanity...

A little part of me is ashamed at my materialistic/consumerist urges, another part laments the damage I have just done to my bank account, while still another part laughs at the narcissistic impulse that drives my purchases... but a much larger part, one that outweighs all the rest of the parts combined, was thrilled to see that the Airborne Express order tracking webpage shows that my new computer is out for delivery...

I hate being sick...

but I love the alternate perceptions that illness provides. There is a heightened sensitivity of the skin which becomes a dull ache right before I start to experience the more unpleasant symptoms. And my thoughts take an a completely different structure/pattern...

of course this all makes me somewhat incoherent in a social respect.

I have some things to say later about the 3D Film Expo at the American Cinematheque and a few ideas Peggy and I talked about today...

but for now:

More Feedback...

(referencing Chris Crawford's conversation metaphor for interactivity)

Predictability is bad in conversation. It's boring and a waste of energy.

Predictable conversations yield little if any insight.

Feedback!

The issue in mind mind at the moment is digital vs. analog... and this has nothing to do with computers.

A feedback system has a sampling rate for the user's input and a sensitivity to variation in that input. So it seems that there are two extremes: 1) identical output based on approximate/identical input. 2) non-identical output based approximate/identical input.

So think about the range of expression and control.

I am much more interested in devices that have "personality" or "character" such as musical instruments or sports equipment. Every violin produces a different sound and every baseball bat has a unique sweet spot which promotes an intimate relationship between the player and the instrument.

Unpredictability can be good and bad depending on the goal of the user/player.

After growing up surrounded by one-to-one relationships with computers, I personally like to be surprised.

Let's have fun...
