'The Long Tail'

If you haven't read this article about selling media beyond the 'mainstream', then I highly recommend an immediate cessation of your current activity to cover it front to back:

The Long Tail

It may even make you smile about the future of consumer-driven media. And that alone is worth your time.

post graduate

so after the third-years graduate in may, will there be a place for us on the blog? like 'interactive media alumni'? or do we just fall off into the absent void outside of the web?

is it too early to think about this?

please insert your "IF you graduate..." comments below:

the media is the metadata

I just realized that this is what my thesis ('Dynamic Image Paths') is about:

The media is the metadata.

I make no apology to McLuhan.

My project is about navigation, about looking at old media in a new way by controlling the images through the metatdata, specifically the space, time and visual components. The promise of these dimensions is the chance to experience them highlighted/foregrounded. I'm asking the user to perform a search, in real-time, of the aspects of the images that will be viewed, so that the final visual experience will be a surprise even though the structure of the choices made by the system is explicit.

I'm writing this while on a break in the middle of class and hopped up on caffeine. So I'll have to think about this a lot more in the next few days...

this land is your land...

lost verse to woody guthrie's classic:

"one bright sunny morning
in the shadow of the steeple
by the relief office i saw my people
as they stood hungry
i stood there wondering
if god blessed america for me"

some choice quotes:

remember that there is a difference between "where you are and where you think you are"

"most people's lives don't make narrative sense"

"people are defenseless" to art/media manipulation

"beware of better"

criteria of 3 for accepting a project:
-fun
-interesting
-money
must satisfy at least 2/3

thanks for your feedback Laurie. i was honored that you would listen to my description of my thesis in progress. the title that i couldn't remember is 'dynamic image paths'.

Alien Nation

I do not belong.

Though this event is much bigger than me, global in fact, I cannot help but take this as a personal affront to the last bit of optimism I had left for the innate goodness and intelligence of our culture/civilization.
