Following on Raes' discussion, Tatsu puts forward:
Programming when used in the context of IM, it is more like a way of thinking and not just a skill for implimentation. But, it takes time and good amount of expertise to get the idea of programming in that sense. a new methodology might be another word corresponding to a new way of thinking.
I agree very strongly with this view, and believe that it is at fundamental core of understanding IM. It is certainly a qualitatively (one could even say paradigmatically) different way of treating and understanding media.
