Michael Annetta (mannetta)

www.michaelannetta.com

Michael's interests in Interactive Media extend beyond the conventional definition of “video gaming.” In addition to traditional digital games (which he loves), Michael's scholarship is in the emerging fields of transmedia storytelling, stereoscopic3D (s3D), public interactives / responsive environments, interactive data visualization and other real-world experience design (whew!). His earlier career as a theatre artist (actor, singer, director, producer) constantly informs his work as an interactive designer, no matter how much he tries to keep it out. He is also a total musical theatre and comic book geek and is IMD's go-to person for comic- and superhero-related information (DC >= Marvel).

@swiscombe Well, I don’t think that a ritual inherently means different things to different people, but generally recognize its importance. @mannetta That’s probably true: although I have a lot of conscious private rituals as well.

@mannetta it’s such a brilliantly simple idea — porting 19th century stereo technology to 21st century smartphones. Really inspirational design thinking. If it’s 50 percent as cool as I imagine it to be, I’ll be getting one myself…

I’ve already downloaded the apps and I’ll bring it to the PEG meeting on Sunday.

it looks like mentions work with some punctuation, @mannetta, like commas, for example. I think periods don’t work because users could conceivably have periods in their usernames, so the system reads it as the same as a misspelling. Commas, semicolons, colons — all these should work. For periods, I guess you have to be careful…

In reply to - Michael Annetta posted an update in the group 511 Seminar: @admin #bugreport it seems my @ mentions followed by a period are broken again #BackchannelHatesGrammar · View

@mannetta — good timing, you caught me just as i was about to sign off.

first question, answer in four parts:

    1. group documents is now enabled and working. You can upload stuff up to about 50mb, though I’d recommend using the smallest file size possible because browser uploading is inherently slow. Obviously, one could also make a blog post and upload files there, too, then point group members to the link.

    2. students from outside the IMD can join by clicking the ”Sign Up” button at the top of the page (next to ”Log in”) as long as they have a valid usc.edu email address.

    3. once a group has been created, group admins can invite anyone to join the group. just look for the ”Send Invites” link on the group’s home page. you can invite anyone who is a member of the site. once you get to the send invites page, just type the first few letters of the name of the person you want to invite, and you’ll be able to add them to the invite list.

    4. groups can also now have Forums, which can be enabled by group admins. These allow for finer-grained topic-specific threads.

    As for the Courses section:

My thinking on this is that it’s really for very casual users and visitors who want to get a sense of what’s being taught at the IMD and want to look at general information blog posts only. The Groups are meant to be much more flexible — basically to be nodes for real work and idea-sharing. How they’re used is going to be up to the community, really. A single course could have one group, or several, or none.

    …and I’ll add some hashtags just for the heck of it: #help #groups #courses #invites #documents #forums

Yes, this is my thinking, too. @jboyle and @mannetta have both already expressed interest in creating achievements. The reason I picked people from the middle and distant past was because I wanted to leave the picking of more recent people/techs/games to the IMD community… Wright would be a great example, and it would be cool if he could actually unlock himself as an achievement if he ever visits…

In reply to - Scott Fisher posted an update in the group Achievements: Enjoying reading about the various personages that have been embedded in the achievements. Thinking it might be interesting along the same lines to start including some of the luminous figures from the interactive media pantheon eg mort heilig, englebart, Wright, etc. Hey maybe I could ask the 511ers [...] · View

    @mannetta @jboyle awesome idea

In reply to - Michael Annetta posted an update: @admin per a suggestion of @jboyle, it would be keen if we could create our own #achievements to challenge others. This could be tied to classes or backchannel groups and be open to either the members of those groups, potential members or the IMD community at large. And, yes, I used the word [...] · View

Per your request, it’s now a Public Group, which feels right. Of course, this completely deleted all the conversations in the existing group (which thankfully weren’t many). One of the things I like about the group (especially with the new ”Reply” feature) is that someone can ask a question even if there aren’t any other members on-line, but then that question can be answered at a later time and the questioner can check back in to see if their question has been answered (and others can also learn). It works as a de facto Forum but with more interaction and (hopefully) more immediacy.

#bugreport @mannetta points out: ”Ugh. I hate that @mentions do NOT work if you follow the mention with a period. Backchannel hates good grammar!”
Me: this backchannel mechanism uses too much vertical space (only three messages per screen); also, the rapid-fire backchannel group chatter will pollute the main space unless the group is private (and every ”true backchannel” group will want to be private). If we could get a special setting for ”true backchannel” that was a public group that just didn’t show on the main feed or send emails on @mentions, that might be nice.
