Today Gene and I found two slices of an Ash Tree.

We can make 4 or 5 rings out of the two slices. The diameter being between 12 and 13 inches.
These are beautiful pieces of wood. The rings are defined and the colors are rich. We also found two slices of maple - which is a harder wood - but the rings were not as strong and the colors muted. Hopefully the Ash will be strong enough to withstand the cutting process.

It has been great following your progress on the interface construction, Maya, and I had just gotten used to the idea of plywood rings, but this is much more exciting. The texture of the bark and the asymmetry of the actual cross-section seem much more organically related to your overall project concept and will dramatically affect the user experience. I sincerely hope these slices survive the cutting! Watching the demo of the prototype interface, I don't think it will be a problem that your users will have to control the movements of the rings in relation to each other. It actually reminded me of turntablism, using only a single platter. The tricky part may be designing the controls so this is something that can be managed pleasurably on the first or second try. It also strikes me as a good idea to have a backup set of rings - delicate physical interfaces have a way of breaking when subjected to real users.
