I paid for a retail box copy of Half Life 2 Episode 1. I don't have much time to play PC games nowadays, so I was rather excited to try it out on an SLI machine. I was not aware that I needed to install Steam and create an account, the back of the box states "No other software needed to play".
I have a Steam account, but I was not expecting to have to use it for the PHYSICAL COPY of the game. I reluctantly allowed it to install, and it bumbled around for a while, didn't connect to the Steam server, and then crashed. This is a huge usability issue, I can't believe Valve would force users to sit through this.
If anyone knows of a class-action lawsuit against Valve, I'd love to jump on that train. Or if anyone else is equally frustrated, we could start one. In 15 minutes, I've gone from excitement towards a game to wanting to boycott such selfish product design. |

Autodesk Toxik, a new product intended for collaborative compositing, seems like a marvel in network programming. It's like source control for Visual Effects. Keeping track of all the things happening on-screen seems like quite a task, akin to syncing up all the units in a multiplayer game. This is obviously only intended for a local network, but who knows how long before bandwidth will no longer be the bottleneck.
I could've sworn I overheard some of our faculty discussing a similar concept...
