I like how everyone makes "first post" jokes when starting a blog. I know i've done it. So yeah, this is (obviously) my USC blog for the duration of my time in the Interactive Media Division within the School of Cinema Television. So read me.

Thanksgiving Travel

So it's approaching Thanksgiving time, and i thought it would be quite nice if people arranged carpools to the airport/destinations. Also, if anyone is in the San Jose bay area around that time, we should get together...

Apex Electronics

I found this electronics store on the makezine site awhile back. Anyone interested in going there some time?

Modern Heretics Show

ModernHereticsthumb.jpg

Kurosh Valanejad has a piece in a show that's opening this weekend. The show, Modern Heretics, is opening Saturday the 28th from 7 to 9. Themes and artwork might be risque, but that makes art all the more fun.

So, how secure is the new generation of passports?

With the holiday travel rapidly approaching, and all kinds of hubbub over new "secure" passports, i came across this article on hacking the new British passports...

The Guardian's analysis

So the answer to the question is: with about 200 quid and 24 hours time, not very secure at all. And that's how long it took two of the good guys to do it... unencrypted data on the passport, good call guys :[

Backchannel Frustration

Being laptop-less, i have had the "opportunity" this semester to participate in the seminar sessions in a largely analog fashion. The past few weeks have left me slightly befuddled, as my experiences with seminar have left me looking at multimodal communication with a different perspective...

Punk is not dead.

On Friday, i went to Goichi Suda's talk on game development, which he called "Punk is not Dead."
I'm a big fan of both killer7 and punk in general, so it seemed like this should be a very appealing talk. Some minor quibbles aside, it was a very informative talk.

fl0w ripoff

This game: http://www.armorgames.com/games/bubbletanks.html
seems to be a pretty blatant fl0w ripoff. i think some of the original code may even be in there, as the bubble you are controlling seems to move very much like the player in fl0w. or am i mistaken?

Toblo, the IGF Student Games winner is apparently running into some of the same copyright issues that have been brought up by the USC Free Culture Group. Read about it here .

I really don't know how i feel on this issue as of right now. But i'll follow this up when i am not at work...

A Cat, and Bioshock

Today i came home and heard a stray kitten mewing outside my window. Its cries grew more fervent, and my search left me with a little free time for my mind to wander. Of course, i began immediately to think of my favorite game as of late, Bioshock. There are spoilers following, so be forewarned... I will try to be as vague as possible for the most important ones.

Movember

In an effort to harness the prodigious power of my facial hair, i will be participating in Movember, a men's health awareness month and fundraiser: http://www.movember.com/

In order to raise money to support prostate cancer research and awareness, i will be growing my moustache in support of men everywhere who deal with this deadly affliction. Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in the U.S.A with one in six American men developing the disease and 27,000 men dying of the disease every year.
