GOTW - nanosmiles

This week we have an indirect control shooter. This game was part of the "Sense of Wonder" night at the most recent Tokyo Game Show. (USC also had 2 games there. Represent.)

Creator: "Dong"

Format: PC, 1 Player, Download/Unzip

Core Mechanic: Avoid/Indirectly command attackers.

Control: Arrow keys move your ship, attackers follow. X dashes. Z creates a lock on circle/ stops attackers from following. Attackers shoot locked on enemies.

Design Notes: Indirect control is under-explored so its nice to see a game using it. This game gives you a directly controlled "commander" avatar which helps players know who they are in the game.

The fact that your attackers can be instantly revived lowers the frustration at their stupidity. If they make a mistake you just reactivate them. The directly controlled commander is the only way to loose the game so if you get killed you are never stuck blaming the system.

Another interesting aspect is the idea of unlockable BGM. As you play you get more background music choices.
