I read a quote from Frank Lantz a couple weeks ago. It was a Gamasutra article about big games, which he said took advantage of the fact that most of us are living with "one foot in reality, and one foot in wonderland". That's exactly what fascinates me about ARGs. I reminds me very much of playing as a kid, where a walk home from school would frequently invovle flying a spaceship through enemy territory.
So I'm planning on doing an ARG world for my 532 world building assignment. Yes, I was interested in this before I knew Jordan was on our faculty. And yes, I'm glad he's around.
Things I want to focus on :
- Duality : For people in the know, everyday acts are sinister.
- Communication : Secret worlds need secret communication
- Membership : How do I know you’re playing?
I think I' m going to wind up spending most of my time thinking about infrastructure - particualry, the methods of communication. I do realize that I probably won't be modeling buildings. If I built a castle for this world, people who are playing the ARG would eventually want to go there. I guess this means my boundaries are things that I could actually place in the real world. Poster on a wall? Yes. Massive spaceship in Griffith Park? No.
