apparently jobs offered to put OSX in every one of these babies for $zero, but negroponte declined, noting that osx is a "closed" system...

It will most probably be an open-source operating system, some flavour of Linux, maybe an Apple flavour. And Google has been mentioned often as a principal software partner..
