Why We Blog...An Answer.

I found this article on WIRED News today. In the beginning, it seemed funny, a Democratic candidate blogging his way into visibility with the public. As the article went further, it tried to explain that the sharing of ideas over the internet, such as in a Blog is really effective, no only for sharing little ideas, but to also warn of possible threats to our society as a whole. This politician, Gary Hart, supposedly warned of Sept. 11th before it happened...

Take a look and let me know what you think.

At least this is one reason why Blogging is effective. Right?

Does seem like it could be a very useful vehicle for politcal candidates unless it's used just to gain visibility - I agree with one of the comments that Hart should post strong viewpoints rather than try to please everyone to get a vote.

Historical note: Gary Hart indeed more than supposedly, if not exactly specifically, did warn of terror attacks before 9/11/01.
He co-authored, along with Warren Rudman, the U.S. Commission on National Security in February of 2001. You can read the executive summary of the report at the U.S. Department of State Int'l Information Programs

http://usinfo.state.gov/topical/pol/terror/01013102.htm

Here is a relevant quote:
Securing the National Homeland
The combination of unconventional weapons proliferation with the persistence of international terrorism will end the relative invulnerability of the U.S. homeland to catastrophic attack. A direct attack against American citizens on American soil is likely over the next quarter century. The risk is not only death and destruction but also a demoralization that could undermine U.S. global leadership. In the face of this threat, our nation has no coherent or integrated governmental structures.

The complete doc is available at:

If Gary Hart had been blogging then, would he have included the above paragraph? And, if he had, would he have been critisized for fear-mongering? Paranoia? Lack of faith in U.S. security?

Two questions: Would he have posted it? and
Would such a posting have caused sufficient action?
