The Future of (Mediated) Scholarship workshop series for graduate students continues Friday, February 27 at 2:00 p.m. with Session 2: You, Online, a multi-session workshop on the ways in which graduate students might consider crafting an online presence. Open to all USC grad students, this workshop looks at the array of social networking options, scholarly blogs and faculty Web sites to point out options for creating a productive online identity.

2:00 – 2:30: Workshop Overview

What are the various ways in which you might represent yourself online? What are the pros and cons of each venue or platform, and what should students keep in mind as they plan their presence?
2:30 – 3:00: Web Site Case Study
By Vanessa Schwartz
One mode for establishing a scholarly Web presence is via an online portfolio site listing current research interests, projects, courses, syllabi and publications. In this session, Vanessa Schwartz will trace a series of decisions that she made in crafting her portfolio Web site.
3:00 – 4:00: Introduction to Wordpress
By Jeff Watson
Wordpress offers an easy-to-use blogging and publishing platform, allowing users to either start blogging or craft a portfolio site. This introduction to Wordpress will teach participants how to get started, and will benefit both first-time users and those hoping to modify their existing Wordpress site.
4:00 – 5:00 Zotero or Social Networking or Hands-on With Wordpress
Participants are invited to split into one of three lab sessions:
• The Zotero Workshop will introduce this easy-to-use bibliographic tool.
• The Social Networking Workshop will introduce social bookmarking, basic blogging and micro-blogging.
• The Hands-on Wordpress session will address more complicated aspects of Wordpress modification, building on the earlier session.
