Experiments in Backchannel paper

A position paper co-authored by Justin Hall and me was accepted to a workshop on "Information Visualization and Interaction Techniques for Collaboration Across Multiple Displays" at CHI 2006, the international conference for human-computer interaction to be held in Montreal, Canada in April. The paper describes IMD research over the past year on "Experiments in Backchannel: Collaborative Presentations Using Social Software, Google Jockeys, and Immersive Environments" . Looks like there'll be a wide variety of very interesting topics covered in the workshop and the papers are all posted here.

Ah, 16th article down on the second link – thanks!
It seems that backchannel works best if you have multiple screens, giving priority to the speaker’s presentation. However, most facilities are not equipped with multiple projection systems like the ZML. How was this handled in the IML communication class? Did the visual configuration contribute to the distraction levels discussed on page 4, paragraph 4? Have you or Justin thought about how this would be used in the standard classroom or lecture hall? Testing backchannel outside of the ZML, IML, or tech-savvy social groups may also inform the experiment.

I tested backchannel in an undergrad class at ASC - students were somewhat shocked, "you mean, chat with people in the same room as me?"
So it was useful to have them experiment with using AIM inside the classroom. What you're referring to is a tough area Andrew, the difference between Front Channel and Back Channel - pushing the words of classroom peoples up front, onscreen. There are so many degrees of backchannel - people starting to use chat to reach across the classroom is a good start.
Multiple screens is a lot to expect, it's true.

Scott, will you be in Montreal as well? I scheduled my Tokyo trip specifically to be back in town for CHI2006 as Justin and John P. will be there... would be great to see you too! :)
