A Venezuelan gamer speaks out about the country's criminalization of violent video games

This is an amazing article written by a man in Venezuela about Chavez's insane anti-video game laws. This guy risked his freedom to write the article- not only is possession of a violent video game now a crime, but the very act of questioning the law is also a criminal act. Venezuela is basically attempting to heap the blame for the country's insanely high crime, murder, and kidnapping rates squarely on video games and the people who play them. I wish more Venezuelans would write like this. This guy, Guido Núñez-Mujica, deserves a medal.

My second film

Better late than never, right? I finished my second student film a couple weeks ago, if anyone wants to see it.

Here is my game treatment for this week: A casual Facebook app called the Virtual Fridge.
Not sure if I'd ever actually play the thing, but enjoy.

Daydream Redux

A link to my first student film, Daydream Redux. I had tons of fun making this film. I also learned a lot, although not nearly enough, about Final Cut Pro. Anyway, it's campy and funny and I hope you like it.

My apartment

So this blog post is mainly for the benefit of my family. I promised that I would post pictures of my apartment.

Here is my living room when I first moved in. Pretty bland, and of course I didn't have any of my cool stuff that was being shipped in my car.

Here is my living room now:

Much better. It's actually become a comfortable place to hang out.

My bathroom, complete with luxurious shower stall.

The kitchen. Those magnetic art words are really fun to play with. My best one so far is "Suede lightning is lonesome, it always howls the blues."

DSCN0539.JPG
Aaaand the bedroom. Still sort of plagued by blank wallitis. I have to find some cool stuff to stick up there.

So yeah, like I said, this is probably only interesting to my family. I promise that my next post will be extremely witty and thoughtful (and game related.)

Rubik's Cube system analysis

So I was pretty sure I was supposed to post this assignment on my blog? Anyway, here it is, for people who are interested in learning all about the mysterious Rubik's Cube.

Rape games are, apparently, a real genre

It's amazing to me that games in which the principal objective is to rape (yes, not 'woo' or 'seduce') a young girl are actually considered to be a viable and acceptable genre in Japan. It seems that the government has recently decided to classify such games as "platinum".

I guess a Platinum Hit means something very different in Japan than it does here (and it makes me look at my GOTY edition of BioShock in an entirely new light). In any case, the UN is trying to get Japan to ban this type of game altogether. I mean, I'm as much a fan of the occasional bizarre Japanese dating sim or silly harem anime as the next girl, but to have an entire genre dedicated to nonconsensual sex seems a bit over the top, even for a nation which has had to implement women-only cars during rush hour.

Here is a link to the article, and contained within it is another link to the story that started all the controversy.

My first blog post. (Fanfare)

So yeah, nothing fancy, just trying out the new blog. As soon as I get my camera cables and whatnot I can start posting pretty pictures of my apartment and school. For now, though, I'm just relieved to have my own computer and to stop living the disconnected-under-protest lifestyle. Honestly, I don't know how the Amish do it. I was antsy after a single day went by without checking my email, in case I was missing some huge important thing. Turns out, I wasn't.
