art vs. commercialism

i would like to argue that the difference between art and commercial products is user testing - that is, the willingness to modify the product based on others opinions, as opposed to your own.

(i realize an argument can be made about critiques and such with art, but the end decision always lies with the artist. this is not the case with commercial products.)

yeah, but I think it goes beyond that. motivation to create things, scale of production, etc. etc. should be considered.

considered perhaps. but even the idea of scale of production and motivation are suspect when you start looking a mass produced fine art, pop art, surrealist pieces.

even tak something like thomas kincaid crap. mass produced and awful. made to sell, for people who know nothing about art.

yet i think its tougher to define it as purely a commercial product. course, i dont want to count it as art either. (and i dont know his process - could be he gets outside opinions regarding his work.)

something worth thinking about - i think that where you allow the final decision of what a piece is to become plays a much larger role then how it is manufactered
