dhtml sketch

this isnt exactly right on yet and it probably wont stay at this url forever, but heres a rough draft of the ui im working on for my thesis.

the mouseovers arent behaving correctly yet, but thats obvious.

the 'cool' part of this thing is that its being done dynamically in asp. the images for each 'chapter' are in separate directories. im reading through the directories and writing out the images with changes in the style for each one.

whew.

Hmm,

It is interesting to try different ways of mousing over the images - slow, fast, back forth - seems like trying a handful of alternative representations, including automatic ones (like one fresh image every 120ms, or switching images roughly locked to 1/8th notes in a song) would be in order. Nice to have something to play with, thanks.

hrm. interesting. I like bolas's idea of having settings for automatic scrolling -- would be a cool way of making a video, which I think would be more compelling than just mousing over stuff myself.

on another more tech note: why DHTML? Less reliable than flash, and less fluid.

yeah, the trick is going to be playing with how you interact with the stacks. one of the other things im considering is a 'master' image, so when you mouse over the images, you can 1. see where you are by highlighting the image, but actually 2. displaying it in this other container.

as far as flash goes, im staying away from plugins. i know we can have the arguement about flash not really being a plugin anymore, but i still dont buy it totally. plus im using a lot of dynamic server-side filesystem reading to get this stuff out. this is faster for me to develop in and easier to implement 'out of the box' for other people. only 1 variable has to be changed and thats the directory you want to pull these image series from.

making a video would be nice, but it defeats the road im trying to travel down here - a nonlinear image viewing system. we have non-linear editing and we are in an interactive media program. so how can we display our stories in a non-linear way and still retain context?
