qtopia open linux phone @ 7:55 AM

Trolltech (interesting name...) just announced that they are shipping an _open_ linux based phone in september. Not sure how integrated the hardware and software are in this device, but the linux platform is designed to foster 3rd party mobile application development, which is sorely lacking in the current mobile arena. Basic tech specs include a dual-core XScale processor at 312 MHz, with 64mb of RAM and 128 flash memory through a SD slot. The screen resolution is QVGA (320X240), and includes most bells and whistles like Wifi, bluetooth, a 1.3 Mpx camera. No price is available yet, looks like, but I'd imagine it'll run you around $400.
This is the first real expedition into a good development phone that is free from all the ridiculous regulatory nonsense of the carriers. Of course, that means you probably won't be making your verizon calls from this phone - rather, you'll do it through voip when you can hit a hotspot. Nonetheless, this is a good solution in the short term for getting some open 3rd party development going for a more phone-like mobile device. However, if you just want to get a basic prototyping rig going for a phone, I'd recommend getting a series 60 nokia phone and a copy of mobile python or mobile processing.
