mobile / location based games repository

Link

Links and descriptions for major mobile games that use some element of location awareness.

SCOOT is a new game in this model where players are asked to solve puzzles based on their interactions with both the physical world and a virtual world (albeit not a spatially correspondant one...)

Songlines

just got a reference to the book Songlines by Bruce Chatwin.

this is from a review on amazon:

Aboriginals retrace the routes their ancestors walked across the continent, re-singing everything back into life.

Seems like an interesting book. The idea of creating songs via paths is definitely reflected in these aboriginal traditions.

walking.jpg

Walking around Culver City Downtown is a pain in the ass. I must've seen this dude 80 times today, his stupid little smile (or lack their of...) completely mocking me while I stand there waiting for another infinite light.

rfid music

nice, this figured out a way to play music from rfid tags. his implementation is a little strange (born from hacker asethetic), in that the rfid tags basically become like really expensive cd's. but using these with some type of embedded reader could be cool. Video and pics are linked from below.

nime 05

well, got a paper for my thesis accepted to the nime 05 conference. I'm excited to go to vancouver. we'll see about the workshop on 3/25...

but this post isn't about that, really -- more about posting some awesome reviewer comments. either people were just skimming my paper and either got certain aspects of the project or didn't, or there is some serious 1/30 action.

reviewer 1:

The topic itself is not really new, no new ideas are outlined in the paper.

reviewer 2:

This work is original and very interesting. Very good work, very good paper!

man, I'm getting so very dubious about this research paper world...

bandwagon

picked up a little sanyo xacti camera-corder last week.

been trying to set up a really quick / automated way to record < 10 minutes of video, speed it up, and put it in low enuf. quality for quick access on the web. Finally have some decent equipment to jump on this "vblog" bandwagon (in all my vast, inescapable amount of free time...), and I'm having fun taking strange, abstract slice of life stuff, rather than some heavy cataloging system. I'd like to add some more processes to the current max patch I'm using to run the video captured from the sanyo with -- we shall see. This thing right now looks very similar to the thing aaron posted a couple of months ago.

mobile game roundup

josh rubin has a good roundup of a mobile games panel from the g to the d to the c.

link

all I'm thinking about right now is the bassmasters game, but instead of the relatively crappy way they ported it, have some type of kick ass motion sensing so you you could actually use the phone to make the casting motion.

unfortunately, this would work better with fly fishing, as that is more of a true cast... the bass fishing cast more closely resembles the motion of reaching over for another cookie.

Wow, so this is what my thesis project ends up looking like... 386 database entries, each row linked to a specific audio file and corresponding to a physical space.

MSN Viral Story

Hrm.

MSN has an interesting idea for a viral story thing to push their new search engine, which really sucks.

here is part of an article, read the entire article here

So far, "MSN Found" has generated mostly negative buzz in the blogosphere. While that's not necessarily an indicator of its potential with its target market of mainstream Web users, most viral campaigns rely on blogs -- typically run by more techie early adopters -- to raise awareness.

The effort centers on a site at msnfound.com, which introduces a cast of six fictional characters in their mid-20s. These made-up MSN users maintain blog-like online journals, providing links to searches on their interests and to videos. There's Reggie, a London DJ; Tad, the Venice, Calif. Surfer dude; Karen, the Bichon dog breeder; Swing, the Tokyo hotel concierge; Cy, the Chicago-based conspiracy theorist; and Denise, the Brooklyn matchmaker.

It seems a bit forced, to me...

Virtual Walk of Fame

so there is a petition going on one the line lobbying for video game characters to be placed on the walk of fame.

this idea sucks. I agree with the perspective of laist.

maybe we should make a virtual walk of fame... ooo (locative??).

the location clapper?

this is neat. James Scott of Intel Research Labs in Cambridge developed a cheap location tracking system using off the shelf microphones that are attached to a PC PCI slot. I guess the system basically searches for human noises such as clapping or finger-snapping in a 3D space, then does it's calculation thing and returns a value. Haven't read the paper on this yet, but I'd be interested to see how accurate it can be.
