Tasbih (prayer beads)
Tasbih is a three set of beads in a circle, which helps Muslims to have a repetitive expression in short sentences to worship and glorify God.
These specific beads are made of the earth of Karbala, a city in Iraq. This city is a holy place for Muslims because of the battle, which happened between the third Imam of Shi-ahs and the current governor of that era. The battle ended with the death of Imam with a very sad tragedy. In Shi-ahs believe the dirt from that city is saintly clean that they even put their forehead on it while they’re praying and kneel and bow to the ground.
Tasbih made of 100 beads, which they are divided in two groups of 33 beads and one set of 34 beads. The dividers are mostly larger, which can be very noticeable. One of the dividers is a representative of the head of the beads and it’s mostly decorated with different design and has a tassel attached to it. This particular one because of its material has the name of third Imam on it with Arabic calligraphy. The tassel is yellowish green cotton strings. The color green is a holy color in Islam and is a symbol of a martyr.
The uneven size of the beads is an evidence for being a handmade piece. Many Muslims devote their time and skills to help and work at the mosque at any level of complexity. These simple jobs are mostly for little kids or very old people who are not capable of doing more. And that carries their sincerity and purity of their aim for contribution and devotion.
The odor of this piece, the smell of dirt, give off after few minutes of use and rub in hand by getting moist from the sweat of hand palm. The smell is very relaxing and evoke the sense of everything is coming from the earth and going back to the earth.
Tasbih is a relaxing tool based on the actions of its use. Counting one bead after another and murmur worshiping sentences is a very soothing action. It has the similar effect like Baoding balls (Zen meditation balls) has.
This piece also is a representative of separation of Shi-ahs and Sunnis. Sunnis don’t believe the same Imams that Shi-ahs do. In that case the earth of Karbala doesn’t mean the same thing for them. As much as Islam tried to gather people together and bring peace among them, but still there are some holy and religious materials that keep them apart.
This piece and in general prayer beads brought me lots of nostalgia from my childhood while I saw my grandparents or any elders in my family who has pure religious believes and used to pray and worship God at any moments that they find. I remembered the peace and calmness on their face and in their voice while they were worshiping God.
Muslims usually carry this piece in their pocket, which means this is a small, light, bendy and flexible piece and these properties of the piece make it very accessible and handy tool for prayers.
Persian literature analysis:
“Saadi is a famous Persian poet from the12th century. One of his well-known poems focuses on the united and oneness of mankind, and is used to grace the entrance to the hall of Nations of the UN building in New York with this call for breaking all barriers.”
Human beings are members of a whole,
In creation of one essence and soul.
If one member is afflicted with pain,
Other members uneasy will remain.
If you have no sympathy for human pain,
The name of human you cannot retain.
The poem is emblematic of cosmopolitanism. It suggests that human beings, despite national boundaries and differences, are really parts of a single whole. Moreover, the poem insinuates that the members of the whole have equal relationships and responsibilities to one another.
The poem is not written in a sophisticated way. Saadi is famous for the simplicity and yet depth of his verse and that is one of the main properties of the poet character to speak with an easy language to engage general population to read literature and learn from it. Saadi teaches the brotherhood and sisterhood of all humanity to live in peace and to care for one another.
This poem can make sense and be used in any situation, culture, time, space and believes all around the world. Saadi is an ethical teacher, he does not preach a dry set of morals that should be applied in all cases rigidly, but rather he favors a practical, wise, compassionate ethics.
